Malkasian: Dark Blues from Denver

Malkasian: Dark Blues from Denver

Malkasian is a band from Denver, Colorado. They've been making music since they were high school friends. Their sound is dark, moody, rock and roll with a heavy blues influence.

The band consists of Sean Malkasian on guitar, vocals, and various other instruments, Owen Finley on bass, and Nick Gray from Noiseheads on drums. Together, they create music that's both heavy and atmospheric.

Their latest album, "The Macabre," came out in 2023. It's all about reflecting on life's dark sides - expectations, failures, death, and love. The studio version has 10 tracks, each telling a story with a mix of frustration and desperation. Songs like "Jaded Bored Wasted and Sick" and "Headhunter" are known for their moody vibes and strong guitar work.

They also released a live version of "The Macabre." Recorded at The Handlebar in Pensacola, Florida, this version has 7 tracks. It's raw and energetic, capturing the band's live performance essence. The live tracks are soaked in the same mood, showing how their music translates in a live setting.

Malkasian's music has a reputation for being introspective. Their lyrics dive into themes of personal struggle and societal observations. The band's sound is often described as a mix of blues, fuzz, and gothic elements, making their music stand out.

Since "The Macabre," no singles have been released, but the album itself has solidified their place in the scene of heavy, alternative blues rock.

If you're into music that makes you think while delivering a punch of sound, Malkasian might be your next band to explore. Their journey through music is one of growth and exploration of the darker, more introspective side of life.

Around 2014, I noticed rock music starting to sound cookie-cutter, over-polished, and pop-inspired, as if it had lost its soul and become corporate and profit-driven. That led me to seek out bands with a raw, authentic rock sound, which inspired the creation of Cowboy's Juke Joint Radio.
